Essential Chandelier Bulb Replacement Tips for a Sparkling Shine
A chandelier with one or two dark sockets looks oddly unbalanced, and a fixture with mismatched bulbs never quite sparkles. Relamping a chandelier is more delicate than changing a ceiling light because of the fragile crystals, small sockets and, often, the height. These tips help you do it well, whether you tackle a dining room fixture yourself or decide to bring in help for a foyer piece.
Prepare the Space and Yourself
Turn the chandelier off at the wall switch and give the bulbs several minutes to cool; small decorative bulbs get surprisingly hot. Lay a thick blanket or padded drop cloth on the floor or table beneath the fixture in case a crystal falls. Use a sturdy stepladder positioned so you can reach without stretching, and never stand on a dining chair or table. Wearing thin cotton gloves keeps fingerprints off crystals and gives you a better grip.
If the chandelier hangs in a two-story entry or above a staircase, stop at this step and call a professional. Those installations require tall ladders or scaffolding and are a common source of falls.
Match the Bulbs Carefully
Base and size
Most chandeliers use small candelabra bases. Take one old bulb with you when shopping, or check the base marking printed on it, so you do not come home with the wrong size.
Shape
Flame-tip and torpedo shapes suit traditional fixtures, while small globes work on modern designs. Keep every socket on the same shape for a uniform look.
Color and brightness
Choose a single color temperature and stick with it. Warm white is the most flattering for dining rooms and entries. Mixing even slightly different whites is obvious once the fixture is lit.
Dimmer compatibility
Many chandeliers are on dimmers. If you use LED bulbs, make sure they are labeled dimmable, or you may see flicker or buzzing at low settings.
Handle With Care
Work around crystals rather than through them. If a strand is in the way, unhook it gently and set it on the padded surface in order, so it goes back in the right place. Hold the bulb by its glass, not by any crystal or arm, and turn it slowly into the socket until snug. Overtightening can crack small bulbs or loosen the socket. Replace all the bulbs at once if several are aging, so they share the same brightness from day one.
- Power off and let bulbs cool.
- Pad the area below the fixture.
- Match base, shape, color and dimmer rating.
- Wear gloves to keep crystals clean.
- Leave high fixtures to the pros.
Add a Quick Clean
While the bulbs are out, wipe each one and the nearby crystals with a lint-free cloth. Fresh bulbs behind dusty crystals waste much of their potential. For a deep cleaning, a professional can clean every piece by hand during the same visit.
