Downspout Cleaning & Unclogging

Downspout Cleaning & Unclogging

A spotless gutter does nothing if the downspout below it is packed. We find the blockage, clear it from both ends and prove the water runs free.

Downspout Cleaning & Unclogging by Busy Bee

Quick answer

Downspouts usually clog at the elbows, where leaves, needles and roof grit jam at the bends, or underground, where a buried drain line fills with silt. Busy Bee clears the blockage from the top and the bottom, then runs water through until it flows freely. If a downspout is crushed or empties toward the house, it becomes a repair or diversion job.

How do downspouts get clogged?

The downspout is the narrowest point in the whole drainage system. Everything that slides along the gutter ends up at the outlet, and the first bend just below the eave, where the pipe turns back toward the wall, is where most blockages start. Wet leaves fold over themselves, pine needles lock crosswise, acorns wedge into the corner, and fine shingle grit binds the pile together.

The second trouble spot is the bottom elbow that kicks water out onto the ground. Debris that squeezes past the top bend often stops there, and mulch or leaves piled against the outlet can seal it from outside.

What about underground drains?

Many Massachusetts homes have downspouts piped into buried lines that run to a dry well, a curb outlet or a spot downhill. Ribbed plastic pipe traps sediment in its grooves, and roots can work into loose joints. When that line plugs, water backs up and spills out at the ground connection instead of disappearing.

How does our crew clear a downspout?

We begin at the top. The gutter outlet is cleared by hand, then water is sent down the pipe to see whether it moves. If the clog will not budge, the crew works from the bottom, opening the lower elbow and pulling material out so the blockage can be loosened from both directions. A stubborn bend may be taken off, emptied and fastened back in place.

Then comes the flow test. Water is run from the far end of the gutter so we can watch it travel to the outlet and leave the bottom at full volume. With a buried drain, we watch whether the inlet swallows the water or backs up.

  • Outlet and upper elbow cleared by hand
  • Lower elbow opened and emptied when needed
  • Straps and joints checked as we go
  • Full flow test from the far end of each run
  • Any damage or poor drainage shown to you before we leave

Every standard gutter cleaning includes flushing the downspouts, so most homes get this done without booking it separately.

When is it a repair or diversion job instead?

Clearing only helps when the pipe is intact and the water has somewhere sensible to go. Crushed sections, broken straps and joints that keep separating call for downspout repair. If a clean downspout still dumps water against the foundation, or a buried line is collapsed or full of roots, the answer is rainwater diversion such as extensions or splash blocks.

When the same downspouts plug every season, the debris is coming from the gutters above. Well-fitted gutter guards cut down what reaches the outlets in the first place.

How often should downspouts be checked?

Walk the house during a steady rain at least once each spring and fall and watch every outlet. Water should leave in a strong stream, not a trickle. How it works — step by step

  1. 1

    Find the blockage

We trace which downspout is backing up and where the clog sits.

  2. 2

    Clear from the top

The outlet and upper bend are emptied by hand and flushed.

  3. 3

    Work from the bottom

Lower elbows are opened and stubborn packs loosened from below.

  4. 4

    Flow-test

Water is run from the far end of the gutter to confirm full drainage.

Downspout Cleaning & Unclogging FAQs

Why does my downspout keep dripping long after the rain stops?

Usually water is pooling behind a partial clog and slowly seeping past it. It can also mean the gutter is pitched away from the outlet. Clearing the pipe and checking the slope normally solves it.

Do you clear underground downspout drains?

We flush the ground connection and watch whether the buried line takes the water. If it is collapsed, crushed or full of roots, cleaning will not fix it, and we will talk through extensions or other diversion options instead.

Can I clear a downspout with a garden hose myself?

From the ground, yes, if the clog is in the bottom elbow: remove the elbow and flush upward. Clogs at the top bend require ladder work at the eave, which is where most homeowner falls happen, so that part is better left to a crew.

Why does my downspout freeze solid in winter?

A partial clog holds water inside the pipe, and that water freezes on cold nights. Clearing the downspout in late fall lets it drain completely between thaws, which makes freeze-ups much less likely.

Can a downspout be cleaned without cleaning the gutters too?

It can, but the clog almost always started as debris washing down from the gutter above. Clearing only the pipe tends to buy a few weeks, so we normally recommend doing both at once.
