Top Tips from House Gutter Cleaners | Essential Maintenance Guide

Spend enough time on ladders and you start to see the same problems over and over. Many of them are easy to catch if you know where to look. These are the tips our crew shares most often with homeowners, gathered from the gutters of capes, colonials and split-levels all across central Massachusetts.

Tip 1: Watch the Corners and Valleys

Wherever two roof slopes meet, they form a valley that channels a huge share of the water and debris into one spot on the gutter below. Those inside corners clog first and overflow hardest. When you look at your gutters from the ground, focus there. If you only have time to check one area after a storm, make it the corners beneath your roof valleys.

Tip 2: Pay Attention to Shingle Grit

A small amount of sandy granules in your gutters is normal, especially on a new roof. A thick layer, or granules piling up at downspout outlets on the ground, can mean your shingles are wearing out. We point this out to homeowners all the time, because it is often the first sign a roof is nearing the end of its life. It is worth mentioning to a roofer before it turns into leaks.

Tip 3: Test Your Downspouts in a Real Rain

A garden hose test is helpful, but nothing beats watching during an actual downpour. Every downspout should run steadily. A downspout that stays dry while the gutter above overflows is clogged, usually at the top elbow. One that gushes from a joint halfway down has come apart or has a crack. Take a quick video on your phone to show your gutter crew exactly what you saw.

Tip 4: Look for These Easy-to-Miss Warning Signs

  • Spikes backing out of the gutter face, a sign hangers are losing grip.
  • Paint peeling in a narrow strip directly behind the gutter line.
  • Seedlings or grass growing along the roof edge.
  • Drips from seams or end caps a day after rain has stopped.
  • Wasp nests tucked under the gutter lip or inside downspout openings.
  • Small piles of mulch or soil splashed onto your foundation.

Any of these can be addressed with a cleaning and minor fixes if caught early. Our gutter and downspout repair service handles hangers, seams and loose sections.

Tip 5: Trim Before You Clean

Branches that overhang the roof drop debris straight into the gutter and give squirrels an easy path onto the roofline. Having limbs trimmed back several feet from the house reduces how fast gutters fill and protects shingles from abrasion. Schedule pruning before your fall cleaning, not after, so the trimmings do not end up in freshly cleared gutters.

One last professional habit: get the downspout discharge right. Even spotless gutters do not help much if every downspout empties against the foundation. Extensions, splash blocks or underground lines can carry water far enough away to keep the basement dry. Our rainwater diversion service can recommend the best option for your yard.
