DIY Home Maintenance vs. Professional Services: Making the Right Choice for Your Windows and Gutters
Welcome to the Busy Bee blog. We are a window and gutter cleaning company based in Northborough, and this space is where we share practical advice for keeping a Massachusetts home in good shape from the outside in. A fitting first topic is a question homeowners ask us all the time: which jobs should I handle myself, and when does it make sense to call someone?
There is no single right answer. Plenty of people enjoy rolling up their sleeves, and some tasks really are easy to do well with a bucket and a free Saturday. Others carry real risk or need equipment most households never own. Thinking through a few factors will help you decide.
Start With Height and Access
The biggest dividing line is how far off the ground the work happens. Ground-floor windows, a sliding patio door or a low gutter run on a ranch home are reasonable DIY territory. Second- and third-story windows, steep rooflines and gutters above a deck or a sloped yard are a different story. Ladder falls are one of the most common ways homeowners get hurt doing chores, and the danger climbs quickly when you are reaching sideways while holding a scoop or a squeegee.
Professionals manage that risk with gear designed for it. We use water-fed poles that let us wash upper glass from the ground, and aerial lifts for spots that need hands-on access. Our crews are fully insured, which protects you if something unexpected happens on your property.
Consider the Tools You Actually Have
Streak-free windows depend on more than effort. Purified water, quality squeegee rubber and proper scrubbing pads all change the finished result. Household glass spray tends to leave film that attracts dust and shows up as haze in low winter sun. Gutters require a stable ladder, standoff brackets to protect the gutter lip, gloves, a way to bag debris and a hose to flush each downspout. If you would need to buy or borrow most of that, the math on doing it yourself starts to shift.
Be Honest About Time
A thorough window cleaning on an average colonial, inside and out, can eat an entire weekend for one person. Gutters take less time but tend to fall on the busiest weeks of fall, right when leaves are dropping and the weather is turning. Ask yourself what that time is worth to you and what else is competing for it.
A Simple Way to Split the Work
Many of our clients land on a hybrid approach that keeps them hands-on without taking unnecessary chances:
- Wipe down ground-level glass and sills between professional visits.
- Rinse screens with a garden hose and let them dry in the sun.
- Walk the yard after storms and note sagging gutters or loose downspouts.
- Leave upper-story windows and full gutter cleanouts to an insured crew.
This approach keeps the house looking cared for year-round while the higher-risk jobs get done safely once or twice a year.
When a Pro Is Clearly the Better Call
Hire help if you notice water spilling over the gutter edge during rain, ice building along the roof edge in winter, plants sprouting from the troughs, or windows you simply cannot reach from a step stool. These are signs the job has outgrown a casual afternoon.
